Interview Essay:

The purpose of the forecasting interview assignment is for you to gain insight into the kinds of forecasting techniques that are currently in place in the real world. A secondary benefit many students experience is an enhanced understanding of the nature of their places of employment.
The interview can also increase your exposure to key individuals in the management team of your organization.
You will be evaluated on the efficiency of the interview and your ability to elicit the information needed. The level of sophistication of the forecasting techniques involved is not a grading criterion.
Have a 3-4 page report and brief presentation ready (no PowerPoint) to hand in for this assignment. All APA formatting will apply.

You may want to use the following approach:

  1. Identify the person at your workplace who is responsible for forecasting demand, and
schedule an interview. If no formal demand forecasting is occurring, informal guessing usually
is, and an interview with the individuals making these guesses can be tremendously insightful.
  2. Prepare an organized series of questions that will elicit the needed information quickly.
Remember that interviewees are busy people.
  3. Plan on gathering information on the kinds of forecasting techniques currently used, their
perceived strengths and pitfalls, how your organization uses the results, and any planned
changes in forecasting methods in the future. On a content level, try to find out what specific
variables drive product demand and their relative importance.
  4. Prepare a form for your interview subject to sign that documents his or her permission for
you to use the data gathered during class.
